2020 Wonthaggi Human Powered Grand Prix cancelled due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns

The 2020 Wonthaggi Human Powered Grand Prix event has been cancelled in the wake of the worldwide Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). The 23rd edition of the event was scheduled to be held on 20 – 22 March 2020.

The health and wellbeing of Wonthaggi Human Powered Grand Prix participants, volunteers, family and friends are the highest priority. This decision has been made after closely monitoring the information on COVID-19 from the relevant trusted global authorities, the Victorian Department of Education and the Bass Coast Shire Council.

The event would have attracted over 3,500 people aged 9 to 70 who would be camping and competing together over three days on the event site. As such the risk of transmission between participants is deemed too significant and the potential subsequent flow-on impact on regional and rural health services would be considerable if an outbreak occurred.

Whilst this decision was not taken lightly, the Wonthaggi Human Powered Grand Prix team hope that our participants, sponsors and stakeholders understand the reasons behind this cancellation.

There are many in the broader HPV community who felt strongly about this event in Wonthaggi. They believed that it always produced great racing and great learning experiences for people of all ages.

The previous Wonthaggi HPV Inc Committee members and in-particular the previous Event Director, Ewan Cole, have all also given generously of their time and energy in this year of transition.

To get this far, the Wonthaggi Human Powered Grand Prix has been generously supported and encouraged by the team at Trisled, the Bass Coast Council, the Inverloch & District Community Bank, WheelHeat Wonthaggi, Verdant Dwellings, Evolve To Grow, Bendigo Taskmaster, along with a number of individual donors. Event organisers will be in touch with each of these supporters directly.

Refunds for teams

All teams will be issued with a refund of $300.00 inc. GST per entry. Unfortunately, full refunds are not possible due to the considerable investment in equipment and resources that has already been committed to hold this event. We hope teams understand this situation. Event organisers will be in touch with Team Managers to arrange these refunds.

A discounted entry fee for a 2021 event will be offered for teams. Further details will advised at a later date.

Refunds for marquee hire

All teams who booked marquees for hire will have these refunded in full. Event organisers will be in touch with Team Managers to arrange these refunds.
